The lab congratulates Nour Elhouda Saidi on successfully completing her MSc. During the last 2 years, Nour developed an imaging tool for detection of T cells in tumors.

The Oweida lab welcomed Lea Bouchard who will be investigating mechanisms of synergy between radiotherapy and immunotherapy in lung cancer. Lea is an MD student who will be pursuing a 1-year MSc in the lab.

After 2 years of waiting, our lab finally welcomed the state-of-the-art preclinical image-guided irradiator: SmART Plus from Precision X-Ray. Special thanks to Kiran Bira for installation, technical support and help throughout the process. We are excited to start using and sharing this amazing piece of equipment. It will advance research in a wide range of areas that involve radiotherapy, CT imaging, bioluminescence imaging, cell irradiation and others.

The lab welcomed MITACS summer student, Nancy Ruiz Dominguez from Mexico. Nancy is current an MD student and will be working on studying the immune microenvironment in lung cancer.

The lab's PhD student, Ryma Haroun, published a comprehensive review paper on the subject of Toll-Like receptors and the response to radiotherapy in cancer. The review paper was featured on the journal's cover page. Congratulations Ryma!

The lab welcomes Léanie Moreau as a summer research student. Léanie is currently in her final year at Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières. She will be working on a new project to develop an imaging method to detect immune cells in lung cancer.

The lab received its first grant on lung cancer research from the Quebec Respiratory Health Research Network (QRHRN). The grant will allow us to study immune-related mechanisms of radioresistance in squamous cell lung cancer. We are grateful to the QRHRN for their support.

The lab welcomed our new student Hassan Lyoubi who will be joining as a summer student for 2 months. Hassan is an aspiring student wishing to pursue medicine. He will start his BSc at Universite de Sherbrooke in September 2020. In the mean time, he will be working on how radiation changes the immune profile of cancer cells. Welcome Hassan!

The Canadian government opened a special program to attract students from specific countries to pursue a Master's degree in Canada. I am looking to recruit 2 Master's students to work in my lab on radiation therapy in cancer. The study is fully funded by the government of Canada ($120,000 for 2 years). The list of eligible nationalities includes Palestinians living in Gaza and the West Bank.

The CRCHUS invited a great speaker, Jonathan Bramson from McMaster University to speak about engineering the fight against cancer. The talk focused on genetic modification of T cell receptors for improved recognition of tumor associated antigens.

Startup fund has been activated and we look forward to begin purchasing important supplies for the lab. An important topic for starting labs including ours is strategic spending of startup funds, particularly in the absence of external grants.

We obtained the first set of instruments and equipment for our lab. We are grateful to the CHUS administration for allowing us to obtain equipment from labs that closed down. Some of the equipment we obtained includes Western blot apparatus, microplate reader, light microscope and histology apparatus. We are grateful to Lucas, MSc student in pharmacology for his invaluable assistance in delivering items to the lab.
